zea mays

a few weeks ago i had the opportunity to teach a workshop in experimental screen printing at zea mays printmaking in florence, mass.  it was so great - its really a treat to share knowledge with people and watch them use that knowledge to create their own work.  i got connected with zea mays through kim rosen, an illustrator who wanted to learn screen printing.  thanks, kim!

we've been making popsicles this summer. this one was horchata, with this recipe. i skipped the cheesecloth in the recipe so they were a little gritty. but i love the patterns in the ice.

hi folks, it has been a while! i've been spending the last few months getting to know my baby daughter lena, who was born in early june. so far she's sweet sweet sweet and curious about the world. what an amazing thing, to watch a new person from day one. here she is on her first outing to the little beach at a lake near our house. we love introducing her to new things, though she didn't like having her toes in the cool lake water as much as we did!

i made a diaper bag for the baby with some orange denim i screenprinted. i lined it with a waterproof coated fabric from ikea. i've never made a messenger bag before - it was a bit of a project to figure out what features I needed to include!

i've been looking through some archives, and found this picture of me beachcombing at agate beach in humboldt, ca. i miss visiting the great beaches there.

baby sewing

i have started making some things for the baby on the way.

top photo: with some leftover fleece in my cloudlets print, i made the booties with a pattern from amy butler's book little stitches for little ones.

bottom photo: with some cotton jersey in my new diamonds print, i adapted the baby quilt pattern from lena corwin's book printing by hand.

i'm so thrilled to be a contributor to sarah ahearn bellmare's new book painted pages. the book is a gorgeous look into sarah's process as a painter, and focuses on how she uses sketchbooks in her work. the styling and photography in the book are really stellar, making it extra special. the last photo is of my contribution to the book - showing my path from inspiration to sketchbook to final pattern design. congratulations, sarah!!

i was exploring mara hoffman's website after reading this post on fly. i'm so in love with this dress. i can wear it pregnant, right??

Friday, May 6, 2011

i hadn't intended to keep this a secret (and it is certainly obvious to anyone who has seen me lately!) but i am 8 months pregnant. we are getting pretty excited and nervous about the baby to come. we took advantage of the beautiful spring weather last weekend to take a few pictures of my giant belly.

maple sugaring season just ended here in massachusetts. i probably shouldn't have eaten all of those pancakes (and the butter!) at gould's sugar house, but i did.

craft night

i got the final word from julie - there were 140 people at the craft night i hosted last week at etsy! it was great to see everyone's creativity flowing, and there were some excellent results with our freezer paper stencil project. i hope i'll be able to host another craft night in the future.

etsy

i had such a great time visiting the etsy headquarters in brooklyn this week! craft night was a big success (i'll post photos soon), and getting to see the offices of such a creative company was an inspiration. there is a photo booth in the craft lab space (of course!) and i had to take some pictures with julie, who organized my whole visit. thanks, julie and etsy!

craft night at etsy labs

i am headed down to nyc for a weekend of visiting with friends, then on monday april 4th, i'll be hosting craft night at etsy labs! we'll make freezer paper stencils and use them on fabric - this is a great, simple technique for decorating tees and other things. come by and craft with me from 4-8pm at etsy in brooklyn. bring a light colored tee shirt or other fabric to work with - everything else is free! see you there.

patagonia trail running

this is one of my favorite projects yet for patagonia - a reflective graphic for their new trail running apparel for men and women. it was fun to design something small and iconic. i can't wait to see it in the dark!

thanks to sewnews for writing about design your own tees in the april/may issue.

butterflies

here's another of the designs i worked on for patagonia this season. it is based on some vintage japanese artwork - i love the way it turned out!

i was in philadelphia last weekend, and visited the always amazing fabric workshop. there were really inspiring works on view by the artist jiha moon. i wish i had my camera with me to take pictures of the pieces in the exhibit. the top image is one of her paintings from her website, and the bottom one a piece done while in residence at the fabric workshop.

for many years while living in nyc, my roommates and i made twice yearly pilgrimage to the dosa sample sale. it is happening again this weekend, and i very much wish i could make it - my wardrobe is feeling a little lacking, and over the years i have gotten many of my favorite clothes at these sales. while most of my purchases from past years have completely worn out from use, i still have a few favorite dresses that i continue to wear on special occasions.
